Farnell now shipping RF antenna switch from Toshiba

Farnell has announced the availability of Toshiba’s new high-power SPDT (Single-Pole Double-Throw) RF antenna switch, designed to support the expansion of 5G networks.

The SPDT RF switch (TCWA1225G) addresses the growing need for compact yet powerful RF switching in increasingly complex signal transmission paths required for 5G antennas. This switch offers an input peak power of 46dBm (at 8dB PAR) within a small footprint, allowing antenna sizes to be maintained or even reduced while keeping power output consistent.

The development of this switch is particularly significant in light of the widespread adoption of massive MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output) technology in telecommunications base stations. Massive MIMO, which uses multiple transmit and receive antennas, is key to delivering the ultra-high speed and large capacity radio communications services that 5G demands.

As antennas become more complex, incorporating super-multi-element designs and intricate signal transmission paths, the need for RF switches that offer low insertion loss and high input power, without increasing the size of the antennas, has become critical. Toshiba’s SPDT RF switch meets these requirements, providing a solution that optimises space without compromising performance.

Jose Lok, Farnell’s Product Category Director for Semiconductors, remarked: “This switch is a major accelerator for 5G, and it’s essential that it’s widely and readily available to fulfil the promise of 5G networks. We are delighted to work with Toshiba to ensure this space and cost-saving device delivers its full potential in ensuring 5G implementation.”

The Toshiba SPDT RF switch is now available for shipping from Farnell in EMEA, Newark in North America, and element14 in APAC.
