The global semiconductor packaging materials market is poised for a new growth phase, driven by robust semiconductor demand across various applications.
According to the latest Global Semiconductor Packaging Materials Outlook (GSPMO) report, released by SEMI, TECHCET, and TechSearch International, the market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.6% through 2028. The report identifies artificial intelligence (AI) as a key driver for advanced packaging, though current unit volumes remain low due to the emerging nature of this segment. It offers detailed data and projections for substrates, leadframes, bonding wire, and other advanced materials used in semiconductor packaging.
Lita Shon-Roy, President and CEO of TECHCET, commented on the industry’s recovery: “After a challenging 2023, which saw a 15.5% decline in the semiconductor packaging materials market, our latest report forecasts a return to growth in 2024. The global packaging materials market is expected to exceed $26billion by 2025 and continue solid growth through 2028.”
The report emphasised substrates as a major contributor to revenue growth in the packaging materials market, particularly flip chip ball grid array (FC-BGA) substrates. Jan Vardaman, President of TechSearch International, noted: “The CAGR for flip chip BGA/LGA revenue is expected to be 7.6% from 2023 to 2028. Other growth areas include wafer-level packaging (WLP) dielectrics and flip chip underfill. Laminate substrates are projected to see a 7.3% annual increase in volume, while leadframes and bonding wire are expected to recover, with growth rates of 5.0% and 6.4%, respectively.”
The GSPMO 2024 report aims to guide companies in capitalising on emerging trends and overcoming supply chain challenges. It provides essential insights to help businesses make informed decisions on sourcing high-performance materials.
