The European Commission has unveiled the ‘Clean Industrial Deal: A joint roadmap for competitiveness and decarbonisation’. The European Semiconductor Industry Association (ESIA), representing the semiconductor industry and broader ecosystem in Europe, welcomes this initiative as a timely impetus to regain competitiveness and strengthen the industrial base in the EU.
Semiconductors are at the heart of a cleaner, more energy-efficient industrial future. From optimising renewable energy production in solar panels and wind turbines to powering electric vehicles and improving the energy efficiency of everyday devices, semiconductors are indispensable for achieving the EU’s goal of a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.
René Schröder, Director-General of ESIA, emphasised the importance of the Clean Industrial Deal (CID) in addressing the challenges of energy security, regulation, and sustainable growth: “The semiconductor industry plays a critical role in the green and digital transitions. By simplifying regulations, improving energy security, and promoting circular economy principles, the Clean Industrial Deal provides a much-needed framework for Europe to lead the way in clean, innovative technologies. With the right policies and collaboration, we can not only decarbonise Europe but also strengthen its position as a global leader in advanced industries.”
The CID is an important step towards creating a more competitive, sustainable Europe, and the European semiconductor industry looks forward to working with policymakers to ensure its successful implementation. ESIA particularly expresses its strong support for measures aimed at guaranteeing energy security and lowering energy cost, simplifying regulation and eliminating overlapping reporting requirements, securing international partnerships and providing a consistent circular economy framework, as well as strengthening of Europe’s lead markets.
