Farnell introduces entry-level Raspberry Pi 5 2GB

The new, budget-friendly Raspberry Pi 5 2GB is now available for purchase through Farnell.

Priced at approximately $50, the Raspberry Pi 5 2GB offers an affordable and innovative solution for developers, hobbyists, and Raspberry Pi enthusiasts worldwide.

Simon Wade, Senior Global Product Manager for Single Board Computing at Farnell, commented: “This is a significant milestone in the evolution of the Raspberry Pi 5. The introduction of an affordable version has been eagerly anticipated, and we are thrilled to offer this high-spec SBC at such a competitive price point.

“When we first announced the availability of Raspberry Pi 5 variants in September 2023, there was an expectation that a more cost-effective model would follow, provided it could meet an attractive price target. We are pleased to say that this has now been realised with the Raspberry Pi 5 2GB.”

The entry-level Raspberry Pi 5 2GB features a 2.4GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 CPU, equipped with cryptography extensions, 512KB per-core L2 caches, and a 2MB shared L3 cache, all running on a 50MHz system clock.

The device’s VideoCore VII GPU supports OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan 1.2, and includes HDR support through a dual 4Kp60 HEVC decoder and HDMI display output.

Enhanced power efficiency is achieved with 2GB of LPDDR4X-4267 SDRAM, dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 5.0 / Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).

Eben Upton, CEO of Raspberry Pi, shared his enthusiasm: “We’re excited to bring the full power of the Raspberry Pi 5 platform to a new, lower price point in collaboration with Farnell. Our continuous efforts to optimise the resource footprint of Raspberry Pi OS mean that many applications can now run efficiently within the 2GB memory capacity of this new variant, while the 4GB and 8GB versions remain available for those with more demanding needs.”

Wade further added: “The Raspberry Pi 5 has established itself as a versatile, powerful, and popular single-board computer, ideal for a wide array of DIY projects, educational purposes, media applications, servers, desktop computing, and other IoT uses. This new version broadens those possibilities even further, making the power of the Raspberry Pi 5 more accessible to everyone.”

The Raspberry Pi 5 2GB is now available to order from Farnell.
