Mouser Electronics explores sustainable smart grid innovation

Mouser Electronics has launched a new edition of its Empowering Innovation Together (EIT) technology series.

This latest instalment explores the integration of renewable energy into smart grid technology, with a focus on the critical role AI and 5G play in ensuring sustainable grid management.

Smart grid systems offer more precise monitoring of power usage and energy distribution, enabling two-way communication between the grid and its users. This decentralised model allows electricity from multiple sources, including renewable energy, to be reintroduced into the grid, supporting greater energy efficiency. The innovations in smart grid technology are expected to power the charging infrastructure for 50% of all passenger vehicles and meet the growing electricity demands of an expanding global population. In this EIT series, engineers are invited to explore the opportunities and challenges associated with transitioning to smart grid systems, along with the hardware required and the market potential for this advanced technology.

As part of the series, the latest episodes of The Tech Between Us podcast feature host Raymond Yin, Mouser’s Director of Technical Content, in conversation with Chris Irwin, Program Manager at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity. They discuss the integration of IoT into smart grid systems and the measures needed to ensure their reliability and resilience. Del Stephens, Principal Technical Delivery Lead for Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) at Summit Human Capital, also joins the conversation to explore the impact of electric vehicles (EVs) on the grid and strategies to balance and stabilise energy consumption.

Commenting on the importance of smart grid technology, Yin stated: “The smart grid is not just an upgrade; it’s a revolution in energy management. By leveraging AI, 5G, and renewable energy, engineers are creating solutions that are fundamentally changing how we think about power. The technology behind the smart grid holds immense potential, and we’re thrilled to share some of the insights we’ve gathered.”

The EIT series offers a wide range of resources for engineering professionals, including technical articles, use cases, an infographic, videos, and exclusive content for subscribers. Since its inception in 2015, Mouser’s Empowering Innovation Together program has become one of the most recognised initiatives in the electronic component industry.
