ESD industry posts $4.5B in revenue in Q1 2024

The Electronic System Design (ESD) industry saw a 14.4% increase in revenue, reaching $4,521.6 million in the first quarter of 2024, up from $3,951.1 million in the same period in 2023.

This data was released by the ESD Alliance, part of the SEMI Technology Community, in its latest Electronic Design Market Data (EDMD) report. The four-quarter moving average, which compares the most recent four quarters to the previous four, rose by 14.8%.

Companies covered in the EDMD report employed 61,653 people worldwide in Q1 2024, a 6.9% increase from the 57,696 employees in Q1 2023, and a 2.6% rise from Q4 2023.

Revenue by product and application category – year-over-year change

  • Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE): Revenue grew by 13% to $1,621.1 million, with the four-quarter moving average up 18.9%
  • IC Physical Design and Verification: Increased by 13.9% to $769.6 million, with a four-quarter moving average rise of 17.5%
  • Printed Circuit Board and Multi-Chip Module (PCB and MCM): Rose by 2.8% to $378.9 million, with the four-quarter moving average up 13.2%
  • Semiconductor Intellectual Property (SIP): Saw an 18.6% increase to $1,578.1 million, with a four-quarter moving average rise of 10.3%
  • Services: Revenue jumped by 22.3% to $173.9 million, with a four-quarter moving average increase of 12.3%

Revenue by region – year-over-year change

  • Americas: The largest revenue-generating region reported $1,937.2 million in ESD products and services, reflecting a 14.1% increase. The four-quarter moving average for the Americas rose by 12.1%
  • Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA): Procured $579.0 million in ESD products and services, showing a 9.2% increase. The four-quarter moving average for EMEA grew by 14.6%
  • Japan: Revenue from Japan’s procurement of ESD products and services grew by 2.8% to $280.7 million. The four-quarter moving average increased by 8.9%
  • Asia Pacific (APAC): This region saw the highest growth, with revenue increasing by 19% to $1,724.7 million. The four-quarter moving average for APAC grew by 19.2%
