Smith was founded in 1984 in Houston, Texas by the Ackerley family. Starting out from a dining table with just two phones, the Ackerleys built connections with key figures in the computing industry, growing the business through technical know-how, sharp market insight, and a willingness to take bold risks.
By 1997, the company had expanded internationally, opening a sales and distribution hub in Hong Kong, followed by another in Amsterdam in 1999.
Smith earned ISO 9001 certification in 2002, and by 2005 its annual sales had surpassed $500 million. The growth only accelerated from there. In 2011, Smith completed a green renovation of its Houston headquarters, and in 2014 opened a new 57,000 sq. ft. operational hub in the city to extend its service capabilities. Sales crossed the $1 billion mark in 2017 and then surged to over $4 billion by 2022.
A fifth distribution hub opened in Singapore in 2023, and by 2025 Smith employed around 800 people worldwide, cementing its position as a leading independent distributor of electronic components.
What began as a family venture around a kitchen table has grown into a genuinely global operation spanning multiple continents and industries.
“Since our founding in 1984, Smith has grown exponentially across four continents to offer localised support on a global scale. We source, inspect, and distribute electronic components for an array of industries, including automotive, medical, aerospace and defence, and more, as well as provide supply chain solutions such as counterfeit testing, vendor-managed inventory, and sustainable solar and data centre services,” said Nick Bedford, CEO, Smith.
From a small family business to a global leader
Smith has decades of experience navigating every segment of the global electronics market. For more than 40 years, Smith has built a foundation of both stability and innovation, allowing it to continuously adapt to everchanging demands.
With offices spanning four continents, its team members are spread out around the world while staying connected to each other, allowing the company to provide the expertise of a multinational company while still giving the tailored service of a local business. Every challenge has a different solution, and its global resources allow it to provide seamless sourcing and logistics support.
“Smith has seen exceptional success in supporting our customers’ procurement needs in recent years, bringing in more than $16 billion in revenue since the beginning of the automotive shortage of 2021 – the best stretch in Smith’s history.
“We recorded $3.4 billion in 2025, the second-best year in company history. And our biggest milestones are still to come: we have already seen three record-breaking months in 2026, including the first $1 billion month for the company,” said Bedford.
Smith’s success last year extended across multiple markets, including aerospace and defence, automotive, consumer electronics, gaming, and peripherals, with each sector more than doubling in global revenue compared to 2024. Demand for motherboards and server components also saw strong growth, with sales for each part type increasing more than 500% year over year.
This year, automotive continues to be a major driver, and Smith is seeing tremendous opportunity within the commodities space, particularly for data centre, hyperscale, and AI applications.
“As the semiconductor industry continues to grow, we have elevated our offerings and expanded into new areas. We have built up our data centre services to provide fully customisable, end-to-end solutions for our hyperscaler and large data centre customers. We also recently re-launched our solar-distribution programme to meet the procurement and excess-inventory needs of customers across the renewable energy landscape,” notes Bedford.
With more offerings across more industries, Smith works with customers’ buyers and engineers to build custom solutions, no matter their specifications.
“From kitting and component recovery to vendor-managed inventory and excess solutions, Smith’s customer-centric approach to supply chain management is built to overcome any obstacle,” said Bedford.
Supply chain solutions
Smith offers a comprehensive suite of supply chain solutions, with tailored options to help customers optimise their operational processes for maximum efficiency.
“Smith approaches every partnership that we engage in with flexibility and agility,” said Bedford.
With one of the largest supplier networks in the world, unique financing options, proprietary software, and broad global reach, Smith can combine and customise existing programmes to solve supply chain challenges across any organisation:
- Obsolescence sourcing
- Supplier consolidation
- Vendor-managed inventory
- Excess inventory solutions
- Data centre manufacturing, remanufacturing, and demanufacturing
- Component harvesting
- Advanced data wiping
- Lifecycle solutions and remarketing
A more resilient, ethical, and sustainable future
Smith’s CHARGE framework enhances the company’s communication on environmental initiatives both internally and externally and develops custom metrics to streamline sustainability data collection in the future. It completed its first Scope 1, 2, and upstream 3 greenhouse gas inventory to improve data management and provide additional transparency into its sustainability impact.
Smith was recognised by both EcoVadis, one of the world’s most trusted sustainability evaluators, and CDP, the world’s leading environmental-disclosure organisation, for its advancements in 2025.
It was awarded a bronze medal from EcoVadis for its strong progress in advancing environmental, social, and ethical practices throughout its global operations and broader supply chain, ranking among the top 35% of all organisations globally.
Smith also earned a B (Management) grade for climate change and a C (Awareness) grade for water security from CDP, positioning the company among some of the most environmentally conscious global firms and marking an improvement over previous years.
Market opportunity
As the semiconductor industry continues to navigate the uncertainty around the ongoing geopolitical disruptions and shortage cycles, Smith’s diversified supply chain can help customers minimise their exposure to risk and enable creative solutions.
Its obsolescence services can help customers navigate unexpected EOL announcements, like DDR4, and its vendor-managed inventory programme allows customers to buy in bulk to prepare against potential shortages in the future.
“With these unexpected shifts occurring more frequently moving forward, Smith enables the flexible supply chain strategies needed to adjust to the unforeseeable,” notes Bedford.
Even outside of shortages, Smith provides customers with broad knowledge of the overall market, tapping into its global reach to sense the headwinds before disruptions occur. As one of the leading independent distributors of electronic components, its experts can alert customers if they need to start preparing before it begins to affect manufacturing.
Going forward, Smith is continuing to expand its existing service offerings and locations to better serve the shifting needs of the industry. It’s developing new and unique procurement solutions for the data centre and solar distribution sectors, led by experienced professionals with insight into the future of these critical areas. Smith is also opening new offices around the world in 2026, allowing it to offer more localised support on a global scale.
“As we expand our offerings and locations, we are also redoubling our commitment to quality by reviewing and improving our existing procedures and technologies. We are investing in our operations facilities and building upon our success, designing and implementing new innovations to raise the bar for quality excellence across the industry. From internally developed equipment and software to expanded testing capabilities, we partner with our customers to craft optimised solutions to address their unique needs,” said Bedford.
Why Smith?
“Smith has been helping companies with tailored sourcing solutions since 1984, and we bring these decades of expertise and insights to customers worldwide. No matter what solutions procurement professionals need, Smith’s global team of supply chain and commodity experts will work with them to deliver the components – and results – they require.
“Whether they’re dealing with challenging market conditions like shortages or need support with NPI or cost savings, Smith can help them get the product they need without worry,” said Bedford.
The company’s Intelligent Distribution model adapts to everchanging demands to provide seamless global sourcing and logistics.
“Our industry-leading solutions help our customers meet their supply chain requirements from beginning to end,” concludes Bedford.
